زنجان یا زنگان مرکز استان زنجان و شهرستان زنجان در شمال غربی ایران که در منطقه آذربایجان واقع شده‌است.
نام زنجان عربی‌شده واژه زنگان است. مردم منطقه هنوز هم تلفظ زنگان را به کار می‌برند. شهر زنجان در دره زنجان‌ چای (از شاخه‌های قزل‌اوزن قرار گرفته و سر راه شوسه و راه‌آهن تهران به تبریز می‌باشد. صنایع دستی از قبیل ورشوسازی و نقره‌سازی و ملیله کاری و چاروق‌دوزی و چاقوسازی و فرش‌بافی (فرش زنجان) آن مشهور است.
زنجان از شمال به شهرستان طارم و خلخال و میانه و از مشرق به سلطانیه و طارم و از جنوب به خدابنده و ایجرود و از غرب به شهرستان ماه‌نشان محدود است و از سطح دریا ۱۶۶۳ متر ارتفاع دارد.

موزه تاریخ طبیعی از جمله مکان­های فرهنگی، اجتماعی، آموزشی، تحقیقاتی و نمایشگاهی می­باشد که می­تواند علاوه بر شناساندن هر چه بیشتر زیست­بوم ­های مختلف و گونه­ های حیات وحش و پوشش گیاهی منطقه ارزش حفظ و نگهداری تنوع زیستی را نیز به اقشار مختلف مردم جامعه یادآوری نماید.
موزه تاریخ طبیعی اداره کل حفاظت محیط زیست استان زنجان به منظور حفظ و در معرض نمایش گذاشتن گونه­ های جانوری و
گیاهی، سنگواره­ ها و نمونه­ هایی از برخی کانی­ها و سنگ­های معدنی موجود در استان، در سال ۱۳۷۳ افتتاح گردید.
در سال ۱۳۸۰ اقدامات دامنه داری جهت بهسازی کمی و کیفی موزه تاریخ طبیعی صورت گرفت، این اقدامات عبارتند از: افزایش فضای مفید موزه، مرمت نمونه های آسیب دیده، طراحی و ساخت ویترینهای محافظ نمونه و نیز جذب پرسنل فنی و کارشناسی برای موزه در جهت ارتقاء کمی و کیفی آن از وضعیت نمایش و تفریحی به موقعیت خدمات دهی بیشتر از نظر علمی و تخصصی به دانش آموزان، هنرجویان، دانشجویان و سایر علاقمندان به طبیعت و حیات وحش.

Zanjan is the capital of Zanjan Province in Iran. It lies 298 km (185 mi) north-west of Tehran on the main highway to Tabriz and Turkey and approximately 125 km (78 mi) from the Caspian Sea. The city is located about 20 kilometers south of the Qaflankuh Mountain Range. At the 2016 census, its population was 521,302 which is the 20th largest city in Iran. The population of Zanjan consists mostly of Iranian Azeris who can also speak the Azerbaijani language.Zanjan is 21733 square kilometers.

Zanjan is known for its beautiful handcrafts such as knives, traditional sandals, called charoogh, and malileh, a handcraft made with silver wires. Zanjani artists make many things like various decorative dishes and their special covers as well as silver jewelry. In ancient times, Zanjan was known for its stainless and sharp knives. But this tradition is gradually becoming extinct by introduction of Chinese-made knives into the market which are far cheaper, more abundant and less artistic[citation needed]. Many villagers today are traditional carpet weavers, perhaps Zanjan's most popular handcraft.
