Hundreds of people gathered for the funeral of legendary Iranian singer Mohammad Reza Shajarian in Tehran on Friday, one day after he died of kidney cancer.

Officials including Iranian Minister of Culture Abbas Salehi were seen at the funeral, which took place at Tehran´s Behesht Zahra cemetery.

Hundreds of fans of the musician were seen gathering in front of the cemetery, crying and holding portraits of him.

"During history, prominent figures like him come to this world to deliver a message. Those who receive this message are lucky," said Shajarian´s son Homayoun, a classical musician himself.

"The message, content, and wisdom of Iran's literature would be transferred to people's hearts by his songs and music. Shajarian is a symbol of Iranian literature and music," said Salehi.

Regarded as a master of classical Persian music, Shajarian also became famous for his political stance in support of protesters following Iran's 2009 elections.
