Once there was a humble stonecutter who climbed the mountains each day, singing as he worked. Though poor, he was content and wanted nothing more.
One day, while working at a nobleman’s mansion, he felt desire for the first time. “If only I were rich,” he sighed. A voice replied, “Your wish is granted.”
To his surprise, he returned home to find a grand mansion in place of his hut. Delighted, he gave up stonecutting and lived in luxury.
Later, seeing the King pass by, he wished to be a king—and instantly became one. But the heat in his carriage made him long to be the sun.
As the sun, he blazed proudly—until clouds blocked his light. So he became a cloud, then rain, then a rock when he couldn’t break through a mighty boulder.
But then a man appeared, chipping away at him. Shocked, he cried, “Is a mere human stronger than I?” and wished to be a man once more.
He returned to his old life, cutting stone with joy in his heart, finally content to be himself again.
Have you ever asked yourself, “What would I become if I never died?” There’s a concept called The Eternal Return, which suggests that if we could live forever and try everything imaginable, we’d still end up choosing to be exactly who we are.
