Along their path, they came across a rose bush in full bloom. Upon seeing it, the wise man asked his friend to pick up a clump of soil from beneath the plant. When his friend returned with the soil, the wise man said, "Smell it."

The friend took a sniff and exclaimed, "It smells like roses!"

The wise man smiled and asked, "Do you know why this soil has the fragrance of roses?"

Curious, the friend asked, "Why?"

The wise man explained, "This soil has been in the company of rose petals that have fallen upon it, and over time, it has absorbed their fragrance. This is the power of association."

Moral of the story: Just as the soil absorbed the scent of roses by being near them, a person, too, adopts the qualities and traits of those they spend time with. Choose your company wisely.
