So, here's today's lesson on 12 confusing verbs.
Some of these are similar in meaning, some of them sound the same, some of them have
spelling issues, so let's find out exactly what the difference is so that you can use
the right word at the right time.

Let's do that.
Okay, so, in number one, do we say, "She's a good student.
I hope she gets a high score" or "I wish she gets a high score"?
This one is confused by lots of students, so if you're not sure, you're not alone.
What do you think?
The correct answer is "I hope she gets a high score".
So, let's understand.
What's the difference between "hope" and "wish"?
Kind of have the same idea, but they're actually completely different in English.
We use the word "hope" when there is a real chance or possibility that something will
happen.
For example, if you say that someone has really good experience and qualifications and I hope
he gets the job, because there is a real chance and possibility that he could get it, right?
But "wish" is more like, "Oh, I wish I could win the lottery.
I wish I could retire tomorrow and you're only 22."
It can happen, it's not impossible, but it's more like a wish, a dream, okay?
So, it's not an immediate, real possibility, all right?
So, that's the difference between "hope" and "wish", all right?
Good.
Let's look at number two.
Do we say, "Did you raise the subject with your boss?" or "Did you rise the subject with
your boss?"
These are confused because they sound kind of similar, but they work completely differently
in terms of meaning.
So, the correct answer is, "Did you raise the subject with your boss?"
Okay.
So, let me show you an easy way to remember this one, all right?
So, "raise" is what we do voluntarily.
We have control over it.
For example, right now, I can raise my hand, right?
Okay?
If you own a store, you could raise your prices, right?
On certain special days, country - in different countries, they raise their flag, right?
Like on Independence Day or something like that, they raise their flag.
Somebody does it.
You have control.
You can raise your hand, raise the flag, raise your prices if you own a store, right?
So, with "raise", you have control.
With "rise", things happen for a number of reasons which you can't actually control.
For example, temperatures rise, okay?
In my home, I could raise the temperature on my thermostat, but outside, temperatures
rise for all kinds of reasons, as we know.
I don't have control over that.
Or, if I'm talking about houses, the housing market, prices rise for a lot of economic
and financial reasons, right?
I can't control that specifically.
So, temperatures rise, prices rise, stock market prices rise, and it's not that one
person is necessarily controlling it.
There are a lot of different factors, okay?
So, if you control it, you can raise something, but if something sort of happens by itself,
it rises.
Got it?
Good.
Let's look now at number three.
Do we say, "Did they lose the bus?" or "Did they miss the bus?"
What's the difference?
Think about it.
We should be saying, "Did they miss the bus?" […]
