The athletics continued with the 50k Walk which was won by Ljunggren of Sweden. There was a photo finish in the 100 metres with American Dillard just beating his compatriot Ewell. In the 800 metres final before first placed Whitfield (USA) and second Wint of Jamaica broke the world record. Mrs Blankers-Koen of Holland won the ladies 100 metres.

In the pool American Walter Ris set a new record for the men's 100 metres free-style. In the women's spring-board it was American first and second.
