The purpose of the turn in the road manoeuvre is to turn the car to face the opposite direction by diagonally pulling forwards and reversing backwards across the road. At this stage in the programme you should have mastered all the component skills that make up this manoeuvre namely; the angle start, reversing to the left and reversing to the right. The key to this manoeuvre is quick hands, slow feet -- fast steering and slow speed via good clutch control.

To do a three point turn, begin by pulling as close to the edge of the road as possible. Turn your wheels all the way to the left and drive in that direction, stopping before you run off the road. Then cut the wheels back in the opposite direction and back up as far as you can. Once again, turn the wheels opposite of the last turn and drive until you can straighten the wheels out. You will then be going in the opposite direction from which you started.

The three key skills needed in order to successfully complete the three point turn are:
Accuracy - ensuring you do not touch the curb or mount the pavement
Control - keeping a slow car. Think of a slow walking pace. Whilst keeping the car slow, steering must be brisk.
Observation - all round effective observation throughout the manoeuvre.

B. When you are ready to perform the three point turn, look in the appropriate mirrors as you do if moving off from a parked position (Main and right mirror), and check your blind spot to the right.
Using clutch control, move the car slowly forward, steering briskly to the right until full right lock. Keeping the car slow using clutch control and steering full right lock as fast as possible is essential.

C. Once the vehicle has stopped, apply the handbrake and select reverse gear. Find the biting point of the clutch. Observations are essential. Performing the best three point turn in the world will still fail the driving test if inadequate observations are made.
Find the biting point to ensure you wont roll forward into the curb. Take a good look up and down the road before you start to move the car backwards, at least twice both directions. Then look out the back window (the direction in which you are travelling) and slowly using clutch control move the car backwards steering full left lock briskly.

Around half way in the road, look over your right shoulder at the curb on your right. When you are around a metre from the curb (use your instructors markers) steer briskly to the right. and gently apply the foot brake to stop the car.

D. Once stopped, apply the handbrake and select first gear. Again find the biting point so as not to roll backwards onto the curb. Use appropriate observations; IE, if any approaching traffic occurs during the manoeuvres, stop and let them pass.
If you feel you are in the way of any traffic and blocking their direction of travel, then proceed with your manoeuvres. Reversing towards any car or cyclist however, the car must be stopped.

Before you move off, take a good look left and right, and then left and right again. Then moving off slowly using clutch control, move slowly forward and steering briskly to the right.

How to Perform a Three-Point Turn
Activate your right turn signal. This will alert other drivers that you intend to "do something". Assuming that there aren't any driveways, this should alert the cars behind you that you intend to stop. Because if there was a driveway, you'd just perform a two-point turn.
Tap your brakes to further alert drivers that you intend to stop.
Pull over as close to the curb as you can (approximately 6-10 inches) and stop.
Activate your left turn signal.
Check traffic in all directions to make sure that it is clear for at least 15-20 seconds in both directions. It's going to take you at least that long to perform the next two "points" of the turn. If there are drivers behind you, you can motion to them to go around you.
Turn your wheel as far to the left as possible and begin moving forward. Your goal is to end up perpendicular to the curb on the other side of the street. You should be 6-10 inches from the curb.
Activate your right turn signal (as this is the direction you'll be backing).
Recheck traffic flow to make sure it is still clear to reverse. Although your car is probably blocking all traffic, that doesn't mean another car hasn't pulled up directly behind your vehicle.
Turn your wheel as far to the right as possible.
Shift into reverse and begin backing.
Stop within 6-12 inches of the other curb.
Recheck traffic again to make sure it is clear.
Put your car into Drive and continue in your new direction.
