As a book, Architecture and the Crisis of Modern science, is a combination of architecture theory and Edmund Husserl’s The Crisis of European Science. This main subject is architectural phenomenology which is different from the phenomenology of architecture. As a movement started in 1950s (and expanded in the late 1970s until today), architectural phenomenology emphasizes on human experience, historical reflection, and ethical and poetic considerations. The anti-historicism of postwar modernism, the abstract Cartesian understanding of architectural geometry, banal imitations of post-modernism, and obliviousness towards the bodily perception of architectural space have been subject to bold Phenomenological criticism in architecture. The phenomenon of dwelling was one research theme in architectural phenomenology.

Is it modern science a misguided rationality cut off from its roots in the empirical Lebenswelt?

Is architectural knowledge grounded in representations derived from the experience of things, or it in abstract, mechanistic principles?
