Today, you'll learn how to speak more powerfully by not using two words. Those words are "try" and "just". So let's see how to use them in personal, social, and professional situations. Okay? Let's begin.

So, let's look at the first word, "try". Okay? So, I could say, "I'll try to finish the report by Friday", or I could say, "I'll finish the report by Friday." Right? Can you hear the difference? Can you feel the difference? How one is stronger, more sure, more confident? Right? Exactly. That's what we want to do. We want to eliminate "try to". Okay?

Now, next, let's look at these two. Could you try to contact John? Or could you contact John? The second one has much more authority. Right? Exactly. So, get rid of "try to". You could say, "We'll try to be there on time." That doesn't sound very clear or confident. Or you could say, "We'll be there on time." So, in all cases, when we took out "try to", what happened? We sounded more confident, more certain, more capable. All right? So, just get rid of "try to".

Now, let's look at the second word you could stop using, which is the word "just". First sentence. "That's just what I think." Or, "That's what I think." Could you hear the difference? Okay? There's a big difference. Right? When I said, "That's just what I think", I'm kind of apologizing for even saying anything. I'm putting myself in a much lower position, like, and I'm sorry for bothering you, but that's just what I think. It's a very... Kind of like a scared person who's speaking, but here, the next one, "That's what I think." Straightforward. Right? Very clear, confident, which is what you want to do. Right? Okay.

Let's look at the next two. "I'm just calling to check if you're free." Again, a little bit nervous, but this one, "I'm calling to check if you're free." See how it sounds completely different? Whether you're speaking, whether you're writing, you can use these strategies, all of them. They will make a big difference in your fluency level. Okay? Next, "I'm just writing to confirm our meeting." Or "I'm writing to confirm our meeting." That's it. Okay? So, avoid that word "just". If you do avoid it and you stop using it, you will sound much stronger, more equal. Right? There's no power problem, there. You don't sound inferior, you sound equal to others, and you also sound more powerful. And this is, of course, one more lesson in our Speak English Powerfully series. There are many more points that you can learn, small changes that can make a big difference in your English.

Now, let's make the same improvements while speaking. All right? So, I'm going to read a sentence to you, listen, and then repeat it without the problem words. All right? You know what those two problematic words are? "Try" and "just". All right? Here we go.

Number one, "I'll try to update you soon." Are you aware of that? I hope you said, "I'll update you soon." See, when you say that, you also sound more certain, cheerful, happier, okay, better, stronger, so many positive things. Right? "I'll update you soon." Like I know what I'm doing.

Next, "We'll try to be more careful." Or, "We'll be more careful." Okay? Good.

Could you try to help the client? I hope you said, "Could you help the client?" Okay? This is important because you want to not only bring these habits into your writing, but also while you're speaking. Right? Okay.

Now let's go to number four. "That's just my opinion." Or, "That's my opinion." Okay? You're not forcing it, but you're saying it clearly, confidently, equally. That's my opinion. Next, "I just wanted to ask you a question." Or, "I wanted to ask you a question." We threw away "just".

And the last one, "That's just what I suggest." Or, yes, did you say, "That's what I suggest"? Okay? Good. That's the way to do it.

And again, if you'd like to learn more strategies like this to speak English more powerfully, please check out the other videos in this series, and I'm sure you will start to sound much more fluent, professional, and confident.
